Cassidy's in the hospital

Cassidy's almost two weeks old now, and overall she's done well adjusting to life outside the womb. But her umbilical cord stump became infected this past week and as of today in the wee morning hours, she's at Children's Hospital for a couple days of antibiotics. She also needs to have some strange spots on her fingers checked tomorrow because the admitting doctor didn't know what they are.

At Cassidy's first checkup, Friday, March 16, she was doing great and had grown half an inch. No problem was seen with her umbilical cord stump. In the next few days, though, Bree thought it was getting smelly, which isn't a good sign. Thursday the stump fell off, as it's supposed to, but the belly button looked oozy. Also on Thursday, Bree mentioned to me over the phone about the finger spots which she thought might be ingrown nails. There were three of them. I urged her to take her to the walk-in clinic Friday to have all this checked. Instead she got an appointment for Saturday afternoon (yesterday) and that's when they were referred to Children's Hospital. I would've gone down with them, but Erin (friend) was there and it sounded like they were about to leave. I next heard from Bree just after 9 pm and they were waiting at the hospital ER. She said it looked busy. Eventually I had to take some cold medicine (caught Dave's head cold he brought home as a souvenir from a Vegas convention) and go to bed. But Bree sent me a text message around 3:30, finally, to say Cassidy needed to stay a night or two at the hospital. She said that Cassidy seemed to really like the warm incubator. :-)

Bree spent the rest of the night at Erin's and will go back to the hospital to nurse the baby today. I'd like to go, but I'd hate to give Bree this cold. It's the last thing she needs. I wouldn't be able to see Cassidy because it's 'parents only' in the nursery. Anyway, please pray that Cassidy gets well quickly and that the finger spots turn out to be something easily treated. There are now six spots.

I'll post again when I learn anything more. I wish I had more pictures, but I haven't been around the baby much this week, and I haven't had a chance to download any pictures Bree has taken with her camera. Actually as of Thursday she said she couldn't find it! Let's hope it's just misplaced. At least I have all the birth pictures and videos downloaded already. I don't know if I can upload video to this blog site... I should look into that. There's some precious footage of right after Cassidy was born.
